INTERVIEW WITH SACRAL RAGE (MARIOS AND DIMITRIS)



After releasing their first album with Cruz del Sur, Sacral Rage and their Illusions in infinite Void are getting known worldwide by true metalheads, so finally I had the chance to have an interview with guitarist Marios and vocalist Dimitris. If you'd like to check the review please click here




Hi guys! Thanks for your time and also thanks to Jan from sure shot worx for making it possible.


First of all lets talk about the history of Sacral Rage, why did you come up with that name? What different metal styles have you been influenced when the band was formed?

Greetings to all of you!!

We started on the last month of 2011 and since then we have 2 official releases and a couple of demos/promos. The mini Lp “Deadly bits of iron fragments” by Eat Metal Records in 2012 and the full length “Illusions In Infinite Void” in 2015 by Cruz Del Sur on cd and Underground Power Records on vinyl.

You can liken the name as follows: The “Sacral” element stems from the darkness, paranoia and madness we breathe while the “Rage” arises from our lethal speed and rhythm attack.

The style and vision haven’t changed although it evolved a lot. We still bow down to bands like Judas Priest, Rush, Crimson Glory, Watchtower, Nasty Savage. Just like the “old” days.



Seeing the result of this combination of styles, what bands could be the major influence for Sacral Rage?

Too hard to answer that. The only thing I can tell you is that all of our influences, subconsciously rise through our songs and we don’t have a certain band in mind when composing stuff. Of course there are certain bands that we have in the back of our minds but As much as we are influenced By Rush and Mercyful Fate evenly Annihilator and Death made the same impact on us.


Not only you covered Mercyful fate, Sacral Rage heralds that influence all over the new album, among some US metal or power metal of course, when composing the instrumentals, did you have in mind to sound like king diamond or was it something that evolved automatically at the time of each composition?

The latter I would say. As said before we don’t try to sound specifically like one or two bands of our influences. We want this to come naturally out of our songs. Of course we knew that certain parts had the King and Mercyful vibe but we didn’t force it. To tell you the truth, we are extremely horny when something like that happens not only with the King but generally.


How was the process of creation of the new album? Was it easier now that you got more experience, than the first Ep?


On the contrary it was way more difficult because we had to overcome ourselves. I believe we achieved that by far. When we composed Deadly bits we didn’t had people expecting our album so it was an easier process. But now we had to satisfy both ourselves and the listener who knew what we offered through our Mini Cd. Also all of our recent songs are way more complex, weird arrangements. This in itself requires more focus and “Discipline”.


How is the general feedback from the media?

Very good judging by the fact that the press towards new bands is very circumspect. The only thing is that many are confused regarding the style we are playing and our influences. You can read in some zines that we are playing US metal while in others Heavy metal, Prog Metal , Thrash metal etc. The average of the reviews is great!



The vocal parts are really high pitched at some parts, sometimes pure theatrical performance and really powerful also at some points, are you happy with the result?

Yeap , I am extremely happy because Dimitris really surpassed himself both in terms of composition and performance .He has a unique voice and just like the rest of the band, he has his own style without copying any of his mentors. Especially in our times where everyone tries to sing like Dickinson, Dio or whoever.



How do you feel when performing live such a large range of vocal quality in terms of low to high pitched style?

There is always a stress about my throat's condition. For this kind of vocals it should be at a perfect state. But whether it is or not when I let myself into madness the result is always the same, screams coming out from outer space, high pitch terrorism destroying the stage.



I think one of your best tracks is en cima del mal, but the song that defines your sound better is Lost chapter E: Amarna's reign, what's your favourite song from the new album?

Again this is too hard to tell because it is really too soon to answer that. If you put a gun in my head though, I would probably say the twins (Sutratma, Amarna’s). The thing about En cima is that this is a kind of a standard heavy metal tune (catchy chorus , normal structure etc). So that’s why many people say that this is their favorite. I really love this song but I believe that there are others that deepens more as far as composition, instrumentation concerns. Amarna’s on the other hand has all of our elements. It is dark, progy, technical, extreme.




How is it going with the tour after the release of Illusions in infinite void?


We have already been added to Belgium’s Heavy sound festival’s line up and we are scheduling some extra shows in Greece. We are on the talks for a tour but it’s too soon to tell anything. We are open to play everywhere, so spread the word!!



How do you feel when you see that bands like Fist, Ostrogoth or The Rods are going to share stage with you?

Feeling AWE!! We are extremely proud to share the stage with these legends. It never really crossed our minds that there would be a day that we would support these bands. We have to be prepared and play a good show haha.


Which band could you choose to share stage with, in the future?

Well: Watchtower, Nasty Savage, Armored Saint. Fuckin’A !!


Can you tell me which country is your favourite for a concert?

Well, we have only played in Greece and Cuprous so there couldn't be a proper answer to this. I am sure though that the English grounds will be killer for a gig!!


Describe your most special moment from the last tour.

Although we didn’t actually toured but made one-off gigs, I would choose the show we did with Jag Panzer, there were lots of energy, and it was really intense and also met our heroes (Really cool guys). Also the Power of the Night Fest in Cuprous was really great experience.



Are you gonna hit the UK in this upcoming tour?

We really would like to do so!!! We know there are many people who dig us but we haven’t spoken with a promoter yet. Time will come to visit the island and taste the grounds who gave birth to Heavy Metal!!


Are you getting better promotion now that you signed with Cruz del Sur records?

So far so good they say. Right From the beginning of our course with Cruz, we can see lots of interest for us. So I guess he is the right man! He is doing great job really. Our madness has been spread almost everywhere and this is thanks to Cruz del sur.


Bands like mausoleum gate or convent guilt are also with Cruz del Sur, do you know them?

Oh yeah! Mausoleum Gate did a great job with their full length. For Convent Guilt, I am not familiar but going to check them asap. Also I met the guys from Magister Templi. Another great Cruz del sur band and their singer is a great guy!!


There are many new bands next KIT that will be reference for the true metal scene, Cobra, Mausoleum gate and Sacral Rage are among this bands, how do you feel about playing in this festival?

When we first heard that we are playing at KIT, we couldn’t believe it. It is a huge Honor for us that the headquarters at KIT chose us as the new act that’s playing. This is the biggest possibly underground festival in the more classic oriented sound. The lineup is killer as always so we will try to give the most of our madness and craze to all of you.

REVIEW OF THE ALBUM ILLUSIONS IN INFINITE VOID BY SACRAL RAGE (10/03/15)



Sacral Rage is a speed metal band from Greece formed in 2011, they have released their first EP Deadly bits of Iron Fragments last 2013, getting known worldwide by true metalheads and receiving also positive feedbacks. After a demo last year Sacral Rage signed with Cruz del Sur records.

  Finally they releasing their first full length the next 10th of March, and the Greeks are on the right path with influences from the technical speed metal characterized from bands like Agent steel or Oliver magnum but with a dark symphonic essence all along the album, bringing memories from King Diamond, also progressive and thrash metal drippings allow Sacral Rage to create their sound effectively; the guitars and drums work very well using technical details with symphonic melodies and palm muted riffs together with complex drum patterns, combined with a high pitched vocals, clean in general but without hesitating making it sharp and aggressive at some points.



The intro Harbringer opens the album to explode in one of the best tracks of the band, En cima del Mal, as the technical palm muted guitars bangs in a totally headbanging track, fast paced speed metal combining changes of vocal styles, sharp low and clean high pitched shots leading to a powerful chorus to follow with Lost chapter E, Sutratma introducing mid tempo galloping, progressive drum and guitar parts changing to thrashy and dark melodic sections in a more theatrical song linked with Panic in the Urals (burning skies) where the thrash styled instrumentals take over the clean vocal style, the interpretation here is outstanding as it brings you to the headbanging action with multiple rhythm changes even adding some Iron maiden drippings.

Waltz in madness explodes in a speed thrash metal with ascending intensity including ultra high pitched vocal parts, changing rhythms constantly with remarkable performance on the drums, followed by Into mental east, mid tempo progressive influenced instrumental track with virtuous guitar riffs and technical drumbeats.

Continuing the good level of technical instrumentals is the turn of Inner sanctum asylum, good bass touches here as the theatrical act of the vocalist enrich the experience with low pitched and sharp parts as a Tyrannous revolt explodes like a palm muted speed power metal masterpiece, the harmony between guitars and vocal melodies on verses are exceptional as the visceral restless pace reminds to Tyran pace.

Lost chapter E Amarna's reign is the last in line and it heralds the speed metal velocity, the composition also evokes the powerful speed thrash melodies,with dark symphonic sections and outstanding vocal qualities, basically encapsulate the band's sound; but don't stop playing this track after the silence starts, there is a hidden Instrumental part at the end (after the minute 10) where the band demonstrates also a short good lesson of oldschool doom metal to end the album.

Illusions in infinite void will delight true metal fans of King diamond and Judas priest, they got the power and aggression that makes you jump to the mosh pit, boosted with remarkable technical instrumentals and complex and impressive compositions.

REVIEW OF THE EP ADRENALINE SHOT BY AMKEN




Amken is a thrash metal band formed in 2011 in Greece, releasing independently their first EP Adrenaline Shot on the 30th November 2014.

Amken style is genuine thrash metal, simple and straight to your brains, the harsh low to high pitched vocals are amazing and also the guitar-drums team play is really well composed to take you to the mosh pit right away; you will find that visceral thrash attack seen on Razor or Exodus.

Adrenaline shot bangs with the tittle track, straight headbanging and powerful wild style, the rhythms go mid and fast really effectively, linking with Zombie Pets in another breathtaking thrash missile, this time comprising more technical elements, with excellent vocal parts and special mention to the drum pounding blasts, including one of their best chorus and a highlight of the band's style.

The dark introduction of Nightmare leads to another in crescendo thrash shot, continuing the nonstop headbanging feeling with a good structure and remarkable melodic sharp vocal sections linking to the final track God's asleep, clearly their best act, introducing deeper and epic sensations to the mixture, the theatrical performance of the vocalist is outstanding, the bass sounds bloody well, dirty and evil as hell as the thrash machinery evolves to a fast thrash symphony that will leave you hungry for more.

Amken brought to light their first Ep leaving a really good impression, their thrash is aggressive and effective, without being extremely technical this cut is wild and violent, showing that the weapons are ready to attack.

REVIEW OF THE ALBUM LOBOTOMIZED BY BIOTOXIC WARFARE (19/01/2015)



Biotoxic Warfare is a thrash / death metal band from Heraklion (Greece), formed in 2012, and releasing their first EP Baptized in blood and greed in 2013 receiving positive feedback from the media. The band went to the studio in september 2014 to record their debut album, Lobotomized, due to be released the next 19th January 2015 and signed with Slaney Records,

Biotoxic warfare sound comes from the aggressive speed thrash metal taking influences from Exodus, Kreator to Slayer, including some thrashy Venom era style, guitar melodies are feed by pure death metal structures (memories from Death or Obituary) combined with oldschool thrash riffs, followed by a technically perfect drum style, mixing thrash and death rhythms continuously in the album; vocalist give it all in every track, showing an aggressive and powerful attitude with raw harsh mid-high pitched vocals, making the whole combination a pure bomb of headbanging metal.

The album starts with a death metal feeling instrumental track, Mors indecepta, as the evil notes lead to a combo of thrash action where the drums make a remarkable job in perfect harmony with the guitar performance, being a good warm up for Proclaim the gospel of lies, this time death metal guitars riffs explode together with thrash metal drumbeats, awesome fast paced track totally neckbreaking, continued by Baptized in blood and greed, one of the best of the band, as a super fast galloping and furious thrash metal attack, with short and straight vocal shots and changes of pace with astonishing palm muted riffs.

The same headbanging fuel continues with Dysphoric Reality, genuine oldschool thrash that amazingly is transformed in pure death metal at some parts, fast to mid tempo in a good anthem that encapsulates the band spirit.

The acoustic atmosphere surrounds you as the explosion of authentic furious thrash burns your soul with the tittle track, Lobotomized, remarkable guitar play and amazing mid fast drumbeats with added double pedal in an excellent composed structure and followed by another highlight for the band, Lust for hate, included previously in their first EP, the patterns taken here includes death metal drippings under a fast killer thrash fire, but creating a great bridge that leads to one of those chorus to scream and bang the head.

Parasitic life and As we Rot(promises of heaven) follow the same force and even raise up the aggression levels with a more notorious drumbeats in two of the fastest songs of the band that will your necks, special mention to As we Rot, introducing death and growling vocals in a vertiginous fast missile combining successfully all the elements the band have experimented along the album creating an inevitable mosh pit.

Biotoxic Warfare made their point of entry to the main thrash metal scene with Lobotomized, succeeding in terms of crystal clear production with the first album and forging surprisingly good album, if you want thrash metal, with death metal drippings, straight and strong, Lobotomized is what you are looking for.

REVIEW OF THE ALBUM FIRES OF REDEMPTION BY BANDEMONIC (10-11-2014)


Bandemonic is a traditional heavy metal band from Ioannina, Greece, formed in 2009 and releasing their first EP Chains in 2012 (click to read the review), receiving positive feedback by the media and allowing the band to share stage with important bands like Enforcer, Grim Reaper or Helstar. After working hard on the new album, the band finally signed with Steel Gallery Records in October 2014 and now the machine is fully charged ready to release their Fires of redemption the next 10th of November 2014.

The album sounds much more professional and solid than their first Ep two years ago, for those who realised about their potential previously, will find out how right we were now that this album is completed, because what you are about to listen is a powerful heavy metal machine that, as a new band, will hit the true metal scene.




Getting the deep detail this work deserves, the album starts with Fires of Redemption as an instrumental epic track with well composed melodic violins and acoustic guitars to literally explode in a thrash influenced guitar riff of the mid paced Torment, the vocals are now outstandingly improved, stronger and more controlled than before, brilliant job on the combination of technical drum rhythms and guitar performance denoting a complex composition linked with Disingenuous as one of the best of the album, the guitars well demonstrate it with an excellent aggressive and sharp beginning, soon to create the head banging feeling with a catchy chorus coming from the power and epic metal elements, the melodies on the verses and the vocal interpretation have been taken care very well with an amazing result.

Martyr comes in a crescendo structure with strong guitar riffs and power metal vocal drippings bringing memories from Queensrÿche style with awesome high pitched parts, but with added thrash elements on the instrumental, this time the structure and chorus denote a modern 90s influence; as we continue with The awakening, as a slow mid paced act with great changes of pulse, with a genuine power metal chorus found among all the elements that Bandemonic create.

Now its time for the most epic bomb of the band to date, Burn the witch is probably the most sophisticated track they've done with neck breaking parts and breathtaking theatrical vocal verses including the fact that some guitar riffs are purely thrash metal, this is a gem that perfect encapsulates the band's style.

Inner battle slow the machinery but keep the high quality in composition, remembering their first EP patterns, to attack with Bullet as another fast paced headbanging missile with high pitched vocals and fast palm muted and galloping riffs, remarkable the contrast of aggressive and melodic parts.

Guardians of time is the most professional track of the album, with an ascending intensity leading to an epic forceful and addictive chorus, the vocals demonstrate his best job and the instrumentals are in harmony and tremendously intense and powerful.

If there was a song that was the pure sign of the band in their EP, a song that will make you remember this band as many other songs such as Heavier than metal for Skull Fist, all or nothing for Cauldron or Full speed or no speed for Striker; here we have The Seeker for Bandemonic, the masterpiece from the first EP is now re-recorded with the higher quality that this album have in general, the vocals are definitely better and fresher than before, I really liked they recorded this track for the new album, its totally headbanging and genuine old school heavy metal, making the perfect ending of a great album.

Fires of redemption will be the necessary step that will hopefully catapult this band to the front of the traditional heavy metal scene, the quality of the compositions and an excellent production situate the band in the level of bands like Striker, in fact they have things in common such as the thrash metal influences on the guitars combined with heavy and US power metal vocal techniques.

Bandemonic demonstrated they are here to attack with a powerful force that deserves to be echoed around the globe.

REVIEW OF THE ALBUM DOOM PHILOSOPHY BY SORROWS PATH


Sorrows path is an epic doom metal band from Greece formed in 1993, but just releasing two demos, to come back in 2005 after line up changes and really hard times, releasing the compilation Resurrection in 2006 and their first full length in 2010, the Rough part of Nihilism, receiving truly positive feedback. Four years after, the second attack came the last 12th of September 2014, under the name of Doom Philosophy.


Sorrows Path are comprised by Stavros Giannakos on Bass, Angelos Ioannidis as Vocals,Fotis Mountouris on the Drums and Kostas Salomidis on the Guitar.

The album heralds a well composed mix of doom and epic metal, the guitars in general develop evil melodies and the predominant medium pulsed drums create the perfect doom atmosphere, then is the vocal melodies that make the job of epic and doom drippings, mid low pitched accompanied by orchestral backgrounds here and there.





The album follows this dark introduction with Tragedy, developing a mid tempo modern doom style, combined with a powerful and epic melodies on the vocals, really well performed by guitars and orchestra notes, linked with Dance with the death, one of the highlights of the album, dark and epic doom in its essence forged with a really effective chorus.

Brother of life attacks like a powerful bomb,to bring you to a slow paced doom rhythm, where the orchestra makes a high presence, not on their best tracks though, being continued by another hit Everything can change, this one bring you the darkest side of the band introducing some ultra low vocal tunes under a doom metal environment (with even gothic influences) evolving with intensity and changing rhythms performing mid pitched and even growling vocal techniques.

The king with a crown of thorns develop their best epic side, not being doom at all here but really composing an outstanding piece, the chorus is the best of the album, catchy and intense. The acoustic parts on the guitars are really well performed as well as the progression by the rest of the members of the band, creating a really powerful ending.

The Venus and the moon continues this tendency of epic heavy metal domination with doom roots, keeping a good pace within the rest of the album, and linking the action with Epoasis, this time is a win of the doom side, forging a true slow paced doom metal rhythms, combining drippings of Black Sabbath and Candlemass with a head banging chorus.

Clouds inside me is another epic doom track, with a remarkable job on the drums and the virtuous performance on the guitars being also an intense and effective song connected with Darkness, might be another track that perfect encapsulates the bands sound, being melodic epic in one hand and dark doom on the other hand, good instrumental compositions here as well as great vocal performance.

Damned (O)fish/LSD is the last of the album, instrumental doom missile, and here the band really created a good job on the melodies, even boosting it with progressive elements in about 7 minutes of evil power.

Doom philosophy is for now their best work, for those who like classic doom metal with drippings of epic and power metal, this must be part of your collection. The compositions might need improvements at some parts and the vocals are brilliant but would sound better if it where more powerful, but generally speaking is an excellent work that will leave the listener hungry for more Sorrows path.

REVIEW OF THE ALBUM THE END IS WRITTEN, BY DOOMOCRACY


Doomocracy is a doom metal band from Greece, formed in 2011, looking for the roots of the doom metal scene like Candlemass, Solitude or Black Sabbath; signing with Steel Gallery Records in July 2014 and releasing their first album late September 2014. The band is comprised by Angelos Tzanis and Harry Dokos on the guitars, Michael Stavrakakis on the vocals, Minas Vasilakis on drums and Manolis Schizakis on the bass.



Doomocracy style is based in the old school doom metal as their main influence, you can find also lots of palm muted riffs melted with power metal feelings and some slow paced thrash metal elements here and there, instrumentals bend into progressive territory mostly on the solos creating an unique sound, remarkably notorious due to the high pitched clean vocals, more proper of power metal or speed metal bands, but fitting perfectly with the rest of the band; really appreciable the clean parts combined with brilliant aggressive sharp techniques remembering the style of bands like Oliver Magnum.


The album starts with Sadness and Hesitation, as the double pedal combined with an awesome pure doom riff take you to the genuine style of the band, remarkable the powerful energy of the bridge and chorus, dripping epic melodies in a slow mid tempo pulse and well linked with Faceless, offering another mid tempo shot of power doom metal, this time the vocal performance is outstanding as well as the harmony between guitars and drums.

Doormacht (Der Apokalyptische Untergang) develops a slow paced thrashy riff enriched with a constant mid and high pitched vocal play, as The Celephais Curse main riff gives you the alert of an apocalypse feeling, following the same patterns but adding more double pedal to the mixture, good headbanging bridge being one of the strongest parts of the album.


The end is written heralds one of the best riffs of the band, followed really well by the doom metal slow pulse, the vocal interpretation is awesome from start to finish. Guitar solos and double pedal drums make this song a good highlight of the album as Emissary of Vengeance goes in crescendo to a light mid tempo beginning evolving to one of their best choruses and excellent high ranged screams, taking out the aggression of the true metal, really headbanging and perfect for singing along with the band if you catch them on tour.


Hanging Puppet begins also with an ascending progression using sharp styled vocals in the verses and a long chorus, always backed by a sophisticated technical guitars and drums, the solo in this track heralds some oriental feeling on the melodies, resulting in a great act with a good harmony with all the band members.


The last track, Sins, contains two sections well marked by the role of the vocals, the melancholic ballad is so well played that gives it an extraordinary intensity with the high and low melodies, one of the best performances that explodes into their fastest tempo shot releasing the full power of force and hate, headbanging masterpiece always with the melodic chorus sign of the band, also great job on the solo being as usual perfectly technical leading to an intense ending becoming their best song.



The end is written will be a perfect gem for every doom metal maniac, on top of this, the band's influences let them forge a powerful epic feelings to their compositions, mastering a technical power-doom metal that will be well recognized by the international metal scene.

REVIEW OF THE EP CHAINS BY BANDEMONIC


Bandemonic is a heavy metal band from Ioannina, Greece, formed in 2009 they worked hard on their first EP "Chains" released in 2012 and now getting ready for their first full length coming next October; let's get this EP in detail!

The album is in general a combination of mid-fast tempo tracks in contrast with slow pulse ballads situating the style into the early 80s era mixed with Judas Priest influenced from the 90s.
The seeker begins with a dark atmosphere background rain as the intro explodes in an outstanding classic heavy speed metal style piece, as the rhythm accelerates getting you into the moshpit and keeping you banging your head, definitely a heavy metal anthem to be remembered.
Chains is a mid tempo strong and straight track with a remarkable job by the vocalist demonstrating the high pitched screams mixed with mids and lows, one of the best of the EP with a tremendous architecture with headbanging changes of speed continued by one of the ballads, Don't regret...just regret, a crescendo structure track that grows in an intense ballad following to Nightmare, a fast-mid changing rhythm heavy metal track with even some oldschool thrash metal breathtaking dripping moments.

Sail to Heaven powerful start reveal a potent ballad with a sophisticated act on the drums, the last two songs are more complex in composition than the other tracks! Excellent job on the guitars at the end of the song, linking it to the last act, Hunting Illusions, continuing the rhythm of the previous ballad with reminiscences to The crimson idol era by WASP, and changing the pulse amazingly well in the middle of the track detonating the pure classic heavy metal bomb being the highlights of the band style.

Admirable job! after listening to the ep in detail you can see the whole story, being a job in harmony like a concept album where the changes of rhythms are abundant, keeping the genuine roots of the old school heavy metal filled with passion and glory. Exceptional job that will leave the listener hungry for more, and the first full length is coming soon so be aware, Bandemonic is rising!

REVIEW EP DIE IN THE NIGHT BY RUTHLESS STEEL


Ruthless Steel are a Greek classic heavy metal band formed in 2012 and releasing the first EP in 2013,  Die In The Night, we can call this debut album as one of this gems of epic heavy metal that you can't stop listening; do you like Manilla Road, Judas Priest or Medieval Steel? Just mix it up and you will start having a clue of what Ruthless steel is about.

This EP takes you straight to the battle with the army fighting and the warcry of the song Die In The Night; Very few times I listen such a sharp, raw and high pitched vocals in a woman, and this makes this band so characteristic, it will be a lot inspirational for many bands to come. Great first track, curiously reminds me a lot to  Manilla Road; vocals and composition are extraordinary.

Second track is the self titled Ruthless steel, very original and fierce lyrics,  and awesome instrumental parts. Heart of fire is the next on the list, the ballad of the album, very well composed with mix parts of slow drums (remember the drums of the first Judas Priest albums?) and deep passionate chorus, great job!

Last song of the album is Power of Hate, even though this is not the most viewed track, I can tell you this is the best in this EP, sophisticated technique in the first riff, the vocalist does an awesome job! You feel she makes a great interpretation of the theme of the song; outstanding chorus, long and very effective! to sing along to the end. It gets a break kind of Victim of Fate by Helloween and the ending that you will remember forever!

Overall, this debut EP is the perfect start for a classic epic heavy metal band, It's a high level of inspiration, and also high recommended if you like true metal, in fact, with four songs like this, buying the next album will be something mandatory!
