INTERVIEW WITH COBRA (2015)

Few weeks ago I had the chance to interview Cobra, one of the new true metal bands that called my attention as one of the most promising new bands of the metal scene worldwide, so after having a well established second album and having toured Europe, it was an inflection point in their career to the top, and obviously Metalheads Union is not gonna miss the opportunity of having a chat with these guys.

If you want to check their second album review follow this link

Hi guys how are you? Thank you all for your time!

Hi Daniel, nice to be in contact again. Thanks for your interest in making a second interview to us.

First of all how were the band beginnings? Why did you choose Cobra as your band's name?

Cobra was born ten years ago back in 2005 when Nito and Pochuck decided to create and play heavy metal band in a rough and aggressive way. They chose Cobra as the name of the band because of an old anime they use to watch as kids. Cobra is a lethal name, such as our intentions with rock and roll music.

Have Cobra evolved in any way from the first album to the second album? How could you describe the media feedback for both releases?

Definitely. Cobra evolved in creating a solid album of heavy metal. This means not only having good songs, but delivering a unity of heavy metal: music, lyrics, artwork, ideas, and put together in order to have a blasting experience once you put play to the record.

When “Lethal Strike” was released in 2011, it didn’t have very much media attention as “To Hell” did last year and even nowadays did. The difference was that our first album had a poor promotion and distribution work. Now we are very conscious about the results of working those aspects of an album release.

You got a very aggressive style even when adding that strong hard rock drippings, how could you describe the band's style and what makes it different of most of the new traditional heavy metal bands?

Thanks for the words. I could define Cobra’s style as a very intense heavy metal rock and roll music. About what makes us different between these new traditional bands, we don’t even consider ourselves part of these tag. We are only focused about been ourselves playing the kind of music we like. We don’t want to be like the bands we admire, we want to be as relevant as them with our music.

Which bands are the most influent for you? I'd like to know your individual preferences.

I like artists that are intense with the music they make. The ones that comes to my mind right now would be Earth, The Stooges, Nirvana, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, The Wailers and Led Zeppelin.

How is the true metal scene in Peru? Now that you played in Keep it true, how do you feel about it? How did the fans react to your sound?

Peruvian metal scene is small, very underground if it’s compared to the European one. Our scene is very unorganized and informal but things are changing to better. Here the concerts are with bands of different metal styles, so it’s common for bands and bangers from here to be into heavy, black, death, doom or even psych and punk music.

Keep It True was a great experience. We never had that sensation to play in front of so many die hard heavy metal maniacs. People there really knows what metal music is about, I think they reacted very well, they could get the vibe and intention of the band. After playing there, I only want more of this.

The vocals that you do are really high pitched some times, changing from sharp to clean patterns, how do you manage to keep your voice while on tour?

I try to avoid cold drinks, smoke and cover always my neck during the tour. Although it’s enjoyable to be on the road having a good time, the best thing is always take care of your instrument.
Tell me a special memory of this European tour.

Waking up during different moments of the day and night inside the van while everyone else was sleeping. Looking at the other guys, our tour manager, the highway, the scenery and realizing that everything was real, that was actually happening. Living like that was everything I ever wanted, it was a great feeling.

Are you working on the new album? If so, could you anticipate any information? What could the fans expect for the next full length?

Right now we are writing and creating new songs. We already know which songs will be part of our third album, but now we are working in two different productions. I hope soon we can have more news about it.

Any chance to visit the UK? What about Japan? If you could choose a country to play, which one could it be?

Actually, we received a couple of offers to visit UK but distances didn’t match to go there. After the European tour we made contact with people involved in festivals and stuff not only in Europe but also in Asia, so let’s make things happen.

If I could choose a country I would like to play in Japan, like Deep Purple did in 1972.

Finally guys could you send a message to your fans?

Beware to our next move, it might be lethal for your mind.

Thanks brothers and hope to see you soon on stage!

Thanks to you Daniel for giving us a space on your site.

REVIEW OF THE ALBUM TO HELL BY COBRA

Cobra is a traditional heavy speed metal band from Peru, formed in 2005, had two demos ready by 2007, playing many gigs nationally and being well known in the national heavy metal scene, the release of their split album with Skull allowed them to gig in more south american countries in 2010.
Then, after working hard on the studio the first full length Lethal Strike came to light in 2011 via Austral Holocaust Records having good feedback from the media and also getting better known in Peru and abroad.

Finally To Hell was released last February 2014, after a year of hard work, and got distributed nationally and also in Europe thanks to Van Records.
Cobra style combines the aggressive side of Judas priest, timing it in the Defenders of the faith composition style, with the pulse and riffs from Motorhead and Venom melted in one; the vocalist is styled with high pitched, powerful techniques with sharp melodic moments, sounding like a mix of Judas priest, Exciter and Griffin.
The album starts with Beyond the curse, beginning like an epic in crescendo introduction that leads to the headbanging action in one of the top tracks of the band, from the awesome bass touch to start to the galloping drumbeats and the potent voice, this song is what true metal music sounds like, you will find yourself screaming with a fist in the air, (dudes that is a really powerful ending), outstanding bomb linked with Fallen soldier, kicking in with a fast tempo speed heavy metal style, accelerated Motorhead reminiscences and drippings of Enforcer, remarkable addictive chorus and memories of early Iron Maiden riffs, but keeping the band's sign.

Danger zone slows the drum pounding shots to a mid tempo hard rocker track, excellent interpretation on the vocals, changing from the mid range to the high pitched scream instantaneously. Rough riders takes the strong pulse of the previous song but its transformed in a genuine heavy metal attack.
Beware my wrath accelerates the speed taking you to the mosh pit, excellent harmony in the guitar duet, that is what i call a team work perfectly executed! Vocals are perfect, bringing the fury to the stage, great combo of lows and highs in a  sharp aggressive style.

When i walk the street keep the glory in the voice in another hard rocker- early heavy metal preference with powerful drumbeats, with a rhythm seen on bands like Airbourne or even Krokus or Saxon.
The tittle track To hell, blast the scene with one of the best performed songs of the album, fast paced speed metal that leaves you breathless and will make you bang your heads till the end! Awesome how they link the verses with the guitar shredding and the chords.

The last track, Inner demon, heralds their most sophisticated drums of the album, also being one of the best compositions and the most epic track up to date, forceful voice that goes in crescendo until the ultra high pitched vocals at the end, everything here is outstanding and it demonstrate the style of the band and defines their attitude very well.

Cobra released a true metal masterpiece that will be considered  a gem of the genre, without a doubt these guys are ready to the heavy metal attack nationally and internationally, with a genuine speed heavy metal that will call the attention of true metalheads around the globe, be aware of the deadly COBRA attack!

REVIEW ALBUM "FROM HELL" BY DIRTY ROCKERS

Dirty Rockers are an Italian hard heavy rock band, formed in 2004 by the singer Mat LaParterre and the guitars Jacques La Croix and Valero Quercioli; and later on Mr Eddie on the bass and Jimmy on the drums. After many gigs they've been composing and working hard till they recorded their first album in 2009 Rock and Roll Monsters, then Jimmy Sorgane replaced axeman Valero Quercioli and now they are releasing "From Hell" with 7Hard records on the 20th of June. Here is the review for you guys.

The album begins with The Rock is Evil, hard rocker headbanging pulse that could be face to face with early heavy metal, remarkable bridge and really catchy chorus, the vocals develop a sharp mid-range dirty style that mix perfectly with the instrumental, to follow with The book of death as the deep bass marks the march of this mid-tempo anthem, composed as an hymn and enjoyable song continued by Rot in Peace, a very special track with reminiscences of Black Sabbath style, the instrumental mix the early doom metal with their own hell hard rocker sound; low pitched vocals and good interpretation of the theme are superb details, as well as the evolution within the track, changing rhythm as a sudden headbanging attack in this excellent act.

The acoustic peaceful guitars arrive in Gone, the ballad of the album, in-crescendo structure and very intense and emotive song, late 80's hard rocker style ballad that marks a break in the album to link it with In justice of rock and roll continuing the hard rock party with some Scorpions inspiration and awesome job on the guitars, with the vocals doing a cleaner singing style, where the harmony is perfect, memorable song that  brings you up!

Ashes in the wind starts as a stronger heavy metal mid-tempo style, angry vocals leading and sharp guitars are extraordinary, well mixed, voice effects are also satisfying. even adding a good dose of epicness at the end.

Without taking breath we find Magic Violence, headbanging strong drumbeats with heavy riffs and very energetic vocals, chorus here are remarkable where the listener will end up screaming with the band, might be the best of the album, really enjoyable this heavy hard rock anthem that continues with Suck my soul following the same winning combo as a very forceful headbanging track with some high pitched vocal touch in the chorus; much appreciated effort by the singer, great track that will keep your energy on for the last track, We saved rock and roll, a hard rock old school music feeling where we could call the true rocker style, defenders of the hard rock and roll fighting together for the music. Excellent track and awesome high pitched ending to be remembered.

Dirty Rockers forged a really enjoyable and extraordinary album, combining aggressive dirty vocal style and the instrumental that runs where the hard rock and the heavy metal collide
They know how to bring the crowd up and these guys demonstrated  it at perfection!
Lyrics are rich and very true with the heavy rock music and ways of living themes.
Composition is more solid and professional and also great job with the production, impeccable job!! As they say...

Are your ready to get burned by the Dirty Fire?

REVIEW ALBUM TIMELESS WARFARE BY VENGEFUL GHOUL

Vengeful ghoul are a heavy-thrash metal from Istanbul, Turkey formed in 2005, releasing their first demo in 2006, and after having ready their own studio released their first single in 2012 called Ruthless Crow and the full length Timeless Warfare in 2014.

Timeless warfare starts with the war as background when the mid-tempo guitars of Chained freedom transform the scene into an apocalyptic feeling riffs well followed by a great theatrical melodies and high pitched Halford style vocals with remarkable change of rhythms. Sovereign Place take some power metal influence with excellent chorus, good job on the drums as they make an epic ending.

Now it's turn of Ruthless Crow, one of the best of this album with headbanging feeling from start to finish; Judas Priest 90's era style, powerful chorus, really good range of low to high pitched voice as well as raw growling to clean sharp high notes, masterpiece in-crescendo solo and memorable chorus to scream as your neck is breaking!

Next track is My crowded solitude, acoustic true metal ballad beginning that turns to a potent strong tough mid-tempo act, striking interpretation of the track, good job when the orchestra take you to the next piece Under Control, with hard-heavy riff with similarities of Blood, demons and whiskey by Al Atkins, keeping the same strategy to offer a satisfying headbanging track that continues with Schaukelstuhl, the ballad of the album, or maybe we can call it a hymn of pure heavy metal, to stand tall and sing along!

Search of Aperion develop an epic mid-tempo start evolving to a classic thrash metal rhythm, headbanging  track with one of the best riffs (death metal detail detected...great!) keeping the roots untouched! continued by Fire and Spell, slow-mid tempo track with strong guitars and dramatic mid-to-high pitched vocals.
Finally the last track is the tittle song of the album, Timeless warfare, pure old school speed thrash metal mosh pit and headbanging missile, combined at perfection with the Halfordish vocals, being the sign of the band, for sure, their best track! Exceptional job on the guitars and marvellous composition.

Vengeful Ghoul first album Timeless Warfare is an awesome bid by this quintet from Turkey, excellent vocals from the beginning to the end! This is the perfect demonstration of dramatic epic thrash metal, very solid work being the first album! Definitely one of the surprises of the year, a must-have album for every true heavy-thrash metal maniac!

REVIEW CHASING THE DREAM ALBUM BY SKULL FIST

Skull fist are a heavy speed metal band from Canada included in the well-known New wave of traditional heavy metal, formed in 2006 and releasing the first EP Heavier than metal in 2010 and first full length Head of the pack in 2011, they came back earlier this year 2014 with Chasing the dream.

Chasing the dream
starts with Hour to live, introducing you to the true metal world with an accelerating riff that explodes in a heavy/speed metal track with some power metal signs, excellent harmony on the guitar solos and superb link between verses and the instrumental rhythm. Suddenly we go back to the best times of the melodic hard rock with Bad for good, one of the surprises of the album; they managed at perfection the composition of this kind of style and made a masterpiece with memorable 80's chorus and hard rocker riffs, then making you bang your head with the tittle track Chasing the dream, true heavy metal unforgettable riffs, high pitched vocals in melodic verses with some Klaus Meine (Scorpions) singing techniques. Great chorus drumbeats combo with vocals and main riff.

Next is Call of the wild, a touch of NWOBHM pure style adding a really Epic chorus and pretty well connected with Sign of the Warrior, speed/power metal on the style of Walls of Jericho by Helloween, excellent remastered track taken from their first EP that will leave you breathless as it continues with one of the best of the album, You're gonna pay, strong heavy metal track full of emotion, hate and revenge; addictive and powerful chorus remarking what true metal is about.

Don't stop the fight begins like a speed metal track that changes the rhythm unexpectedly to a hard heavy bridge linking an outstanding chorus, impressive track very well composed followed by the instrumental song Shreds not dead as a progressive technical piece that keep you admiring every note and enjoying it!

The last song of this album is one of those heavy metal anthems to remember,Mean street rider is an authentic heavy metal old school bomb in the line of Heavier than metal, awesome solo also and great consistency on the guitars and memorable ending (reminds me to the end of Steeler in the British Steel), and leaving you hungry for more of this band.

Overall I can say Skull fist made a masterpiece album where every true metalhead will enjoy, bringing to life elements of melodic hard rock, NWOBHM, speed metal and power metal influences, the lyrics and composition of this album are also exceptional, taking the power and the glory of the roots of heavy metal to a very high level. The production has been improved since the last album and the voice effects have evolved in a way,  risking that some people may don't like it, but c'mon! what they did is excellent! so keep it true brothers

REVIEW EP DIE IN THE NIGHT BY RUTHLESS STEEL

Ruthless Steel are a Greek classic heavy metal band formed in 2012 and releasing the first EP in 2013,  Die In The Night, we can call this debut album as one of this gems of epic heavy metal that you can't stop listening; do you like Manilla Road, Judas Priest or Medieval Steel? Just mix it up and you will start having a clue of what Ruthless steel is about.

This EP takes you straight to the battle with the army fighting and the warcry of the song Die In The Night; Very few times I listen such a sharp, raw and high pitched vocals in a woman, and this makes this band so characteristic, it will be a lot inspirational for many bands to come. Great first track, curiously reminds me a lot to  Manilla Road; vocals and composition are extraordinary.

Second track is the self titled Ruthless steel, very original and fierce lyrics,  and awesome instrumental parts. Heart of fire is the next on the list, the ballad of the album, very well composed with mix parts of slow drums (remember the drums of the first Judas Priest albums?) and deep passionate chorus, great job!

Last song of the album is Power of Hate, even though this is not the most viewed track, I can tell you this is the best in this EP, sophisticated technique in the first riff, the vocalist does an awesome job! You feel she makes a great interpretation of the theme of the song; outstanding chorus, long and very effective! to sing along to the end. It gets a break kind of Victim of Fate by Helloween and the ending that you will remember forever!

Overall, this debut EP is the perfect start for a classic epic heavy metal band, It's a high level of inspiration, and also high recommended if you like true metal, in fact, with four songs like this, buying the next album will be something mandatory!
Check them out, they are

REVIEW THUNDERWAR - THE BIRTH OF THUNDER (2013)

One of the releases of last year was this great first EP
of the polish death metal band Thunderwar, formed in 2013
by four metal maniacs that wanted not only to pay tribute
to legends like Bathory, Unleashed, Dissection or Amon Amarth,
but to prove that Poland has still something to say to the Metal
world, and so they did! Being the first EP with four songs that
prove what traditional Death metal is all about!

The EP starts with VIMANA (Chariots in heaven) with this familiar melodic death metal guitars, to suddenly
attack you with killer drums followed by the headbanging action, and
the aggressive voice death metalheads and thrash metal fans will like.

Brutal oldschool death metal, and a very solid chorus make this first song
a good start of the EP that will continue with a sudden death metal attack with
Shadows of Lindisfarne, this song takes you straight away to the mix of death metal
action with a powerful start and a really good interpretation of brutal raw death metal voice,
suddenly they change the rythm with some thrash metal headbanging bridge
before the chorus, following by the virtuosism of the solo where they
make some symphonic parts to finish with the heaviest in-crescendo ending that makes
this song what it will be the style of the band we hope to see in the future.

The last song of the EP is the instrumental track The Birth of Thunder, with accoustic
intro adding orchestra instruments making a really well composed epic track and making
this EP a very solid first job of this polish Epic Death metal band that really, my friends,
they are here to stay, taking the torch of the old school true death metal bands,
Get prepared of what this band will come in the future!
They are Thunderwar
